yard update

When we moved into our house, the yard hadn't been taken care of for about a year.  As a result, our yard hasn't quite reached the "looks nice" stage because it's still in the "being reclaimed" stages.  It used to look crazy; now it looks a little less so.  Here are some pictures!  We still have a ways to go, but we're really happy with how much progress we've made so far.

So, you can see we have a lot of weeds on the outskirts, but check out that grass! Green! 

We're growing strawberries in the holes, and we haven't put anything in the actual bed yet.  Baby steps.

This picture is a couple months old.  These (and other) weeds are currently my height.

Check out these massive green onions!  The paring knife is in the picture for scale.  We left these onions in the ground over the winter, and this is how I picked them in the spring.  Nice!

We have a garden!

We chose to do a raised bed, since our dirt stinks.  Sometime in the future we'll have multiple raised beds, but for now, this is it.  The pot has an onion plant in it that started growing on the kitchen counter.  It's an experiment!  So above is a picture of our garden when we first planted it...

...and here it is now!  As you can see, our corn is getting nice and big, and the onion became two and had to be split up and transplanted.  All the other plants are still tiny and hard to see in this picture :)  We planted onions, carrots, peppers, tomatoes, and corn.

A close-up of some other plants. This picture is about a week old, and several of these have  doubled in size.

We planted a bunch of little onions, so when I was thinning them out, I decided to bring some inside to grow green onions.

Premise: I like plants.

As I am sitting here at my kitchen table studying for finals, I see my across-the-quad neighbors watering their plants.  They have them set out on a little table just inside the fence of their patio, and they look good!  There are five of them, and they get some great sunlight.  Then I look at our patio.  It doesn't get a lick of sunlight.  Ever.  The only sunlight we get is in our bedroom and it shines onto our bed.  Not exactly the best place to have a table of plants.  As a result, one of my favorite plants has died and another is on its way because I have no place to put them.  I want to buy a plant light.  There is one place I have thought of putting them, and that's inside the fence of our stairwell.  However, we're not really allowed to keep stuff in there.  Fire hazard or something.  Maybe I can get permission to put something there anyway?  I DO visit teach our community aid... Anyway.  (sigh) It seems unjust.
